Emily Dorn, Reservoir, junior. As she did last season, Dorn headlined another stout Reservoir back line this fall. The Gators played the entire season without senior goalkeeper Janie Romer, started freshman Lizzie Dudzinski and still allowed just 14 goals in 16 games. That’s a testament to Dorn and the entire defensive unit, which played a big role in Reservoir finishing with a record of 9-6-1. “Emily is such a smart player,” Ranker said. “She always takes the right angle and cleans up potential chances. She leads the team defense and is always a calming influence on everyone. That was vitally important for us this year since we counted on so many freshmen to contribute.” Article |

Howard, Long Reach girls basketball on collision course for county supremacy
Long Reach
Top players: Senior Kiana Williams (G); juniors Lyric Swann (G) and Arianna Briggs-Hall (F).
The gap between Howard and the field is closing, however, thanks in large part to its neighboring rival Long Reach. Junior forward Arianna Briggs-Hall averaged 8.5 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game a year ago and is expected to be among the leaders in double-doubles this season.
Reservoir
Top players: Senior Nia Powell (F); juniors Emily Dorn (F), Natalie Verna (G) and Jenni Fourney (G).
Despite graduating six players and losing two more to preseason injuries, Reservoir will be among the toughest teams to beat with two of the best forwards in the league in senior Nia Powell and junior Emily Dorn. The duo combined to average 19.9 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game last season, as they both finished among the top four in the county in each statistic. Dorn also pitched in with 11.5 points per contest.

2017-18 girls basketball poll preseason Top 15
#5. Catonsville - Gabby Douglas
Outlook: Coming off their first state championship, the Comets return four starters, but they have a big hole to fill in the middle with Jen Gast, 6-2, now at UMBC. Still, those four starters could lead them to another stellar season, including All-Metro forward Jasmine Dickey, who scored 30 points in the state final, and guard Jameila Barrett, who had 26 in the semifinal.
#10. Long Reach - Arianna Briggs Hall
Outlook: The Lightning defeated Howard late last season and then fell to Atholton in the regional final. They return an impressive backcourt with second-team All-Metro guard Kiana Williams and the Swann twins, Lyric and Jaelyn. Although they lack height, they have cohesion with five players who’ve been together for three years.
#11. Mount de Sales - Abby Kuhn, Maura Devine & Rachel Krug
Outlook: The Sailors return all five starters and most of their bench while adding strong transfers to a team that fell to St. John’s, 45-39, in the conference final. With more depth and speed, they have all the tools on offense to challenge for the title in what appears to be a strong B Conference.

“Those two exceptional transfers are outstanding,” Armstrong said.
